“In his reworking of Zola's text, Scheer has produced a libretto of unusual fluency and intelligence. The first-night audience, expressed its appreciation palpably.”

“Thérèse Raquin is unquestionably a tragedy, and I mean that in the great Greek and Shakespearian meanings of the word. The opera’s relentless ability to create characters that are flawed and sometimes disturbing in their life choices, while still giving its audience the insight to understand them emotionally, infuses it with the empathy its main characters were deprived of in their own lives. Scheer’s libretto is self assured and well balanced. The action in this adaptation of Thérèse is taut and engaging, resembling a play at times far more than an opera in the classic tradition. This is to the opera’s benefit, creating a work that manages to keep your attention...”

“Picker and his librettist, Gene Scheer, distilled the classic tragedy of Therese, a lonely young French woman who embarks on an extramarital affair that leads to murder, down to one of the more viable American operas of the last 15 years. A banner week for admirers of contemporary American opera…”

Dallas Opera Premieres Therese Raquin
“When the French novel Therese Raquin was first published in 1867, it was labeled ‘putrid literature’ by a prominent critic for its near-obsession with lust and death. But the book sold out in just four months. Its story of an adulterous couple that murders the woman's husband and is later haunted by his ghost was as shocking as today's Jerry Springer Show. And it makes for great opera.”
